THE DRAWING BOARD — We had to wait 14 years for it, but we finally got a sequel for “The Incredibles.”

Pixar Animation’s newest feature hit theaters this weekend. Audiences adored the original and called for a sequel for years.

Let’s be honest, studios love to make multiple sequels for animated movies. And you can’t blame them — if the kids loved the first one, they’ll surely get excited for more.

But there are some, like “The Incredibles,” that have gone years without seeing their stories continued. Here are five more animated features that are due for long-awaited sequels.

“The Iron Giant” (1999)

=================================================================

“Incredibles 2” director Brad Bird made his debut feature before the original “Incredibles” with the beloved “The Iron Giant.”

The Cold War-era feature is known for its emotionally jarring ending. But the final scenes do tease the viewers for a potential continuation of the story.

Bird, who also directed “Ratatouille,” has proven himself as a master of the animation genre. If he wants to tell more of the metal monstrosity’s story, I’m sure viewers would welcome a sequel.

“Chicken Run” (2000)

Even after nearly two decades, “Chicken Run” is still the highest-grossing stop-motion animated movie. The irreverent comedy won praise for its witty dialogue, unique animation style and riotous laughs.

The original movie ends happily, with the characters in a completely different place than they were at the beginning of the movie. It would no doubt be thrilling to revisit the beloved birds of the original in their new home.

And there’s some good news: There’s already some thrust behind a “Chicken Run” sequel. Aardman Animation studios is planning another chapter in this fowl feature, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“Spirited Away” (2001)

Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki created one of the most beloved animated movie of all time with “Spirited Away.” The movie tells the story of a girl who gets lost and crosses over to the spirit world.

That world is a truly endless source of creative animated glory, as Miyazaki proved with the spectacular fantasy imagery of “Spirited Away.”

Miyazaki announced his retirement from filmmaking in 2016, but then returned to work on a new animated feature that is set to hit theaters in the next few years.

Even if this new project truly is his last, Miyazaki is one of the most influential animation directors ever. There are surely dozens of filmmakers who idolize Miyazaki and would be thrilled to take the reins on a “Spirited Away” sequel.

“Ratatouille” (2007)

This creature feature ends with the characters back on top. Literally. (The rats start living on the roof of the restaurant at the end.)

“Ratatouille” is about Remy’s struggles to break into the restaurant business as an up-and-coming chef. But wouldn’t it be fun to go on another journey with him after he’s already established in the industry? I’m sure the masterminds at Pixar could come up with another fun and silly, yet elegant, installment of Remy’s story with a sequel to “Ratatouille.” Bringing back memorable characters like Anton Ego and Linguini could make a successful recipe.

“Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009)

Let’s face it, there have been hundreds of movies made about talking animals over the years. But few have done it with such singular style as Wes Anderson did with “Fantastic Mr. Fox.”

The quirky director made a second foray into the stop-motion animal realm with “Isle of Dogs” last year. While “Fantastic Mr. Fox” drew near-universal critical acclaim, reviews for “Isle of Dogs” were a little more mixed.

Anderson should return to the world of Mr. Fox. If he could assemble a cast as talented as the one from the original, which included George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and more, a “Fox” sequel would surely be a hit.
