RIVERDALE — An airplane emergency landing on I-15 closed two southbound lanes on Saturday morning, officials said.

The landing took place about 8 a.m. at milepost 339 in Weber County, near the Riverdale Road exit, Utah Department of Transportation officials said on Twitter.

There were no injuries during the incident, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andrew Battenfield. The plane collided with one car, which had some minor damage, he said.

The Piper PA28R aircraft landed on the freeway at 5600 South, according to Federal Aviation Administration Spokesman Allen Kenitzer. There were two people in the plane, he said.

A new female pilot had to land on the freeway underneath the Riverdale Road overpass structure, Battenfield said. It was unknown why the pilot had to perform an emergency landing.

The plane hit the rear window of a car and shattered it, according to Kenitzer.

Two right lanes were closed due to the landing, according to UDOT’s website. Traffic was flowing normally on the northbound side, but the southbound side was briefly down to one lane, Battenfield said.

It would take some time for emergency crews to move the plane off the side of the freeway to clear the scene, he said.

UDOT's traffic cameras in the area showed the plane was intact and did not appear to be on fire. Cameras showed the plane was taken off of the roadway and traffic was moving normally as of 10:30 a.m.
