KANAB, Kane County — A man died after crashing into a commercial vehicle while traveling on state Route 89 near Kanab Monday, officials said.

Morland Trombley, 75, of Virginia, was driving south on the highway when he either fell asleep or lost consciousness due to a medical condition and drifted across the center lane, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials.

The driver of a commercial vehicle hauling two belly-dump trailers noticed Trombley was drifting into his lane and attempted to move out of the way. Trombley's car caught the rear axle of the first trailer, and the impact caused the commercial vehicle and the first trailer to tip over, Utah Highway Patrol said.

Trombley suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. A passenger in Trombley's vehicle was transported in fair condition by a medical helicopter to a hospital. It was not immediately released if the driver of the commercial vehicle was injured in the collision.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story stated state Route 89 was a freeway. It has been corrected.
