SALT LAKE CITY — A new Utah Democratic presidential primary poll puts Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in the lead in the Beehive State, with Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren following behind.
Sanders is polling at 28% in a Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll released late Thursday evening. Utah’s primary is on Super Tuesday, March 3.
The poll was conducted from February 22-26 and asked 298 likely Democratic voters who they would vote for in the primary. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.7%.
Former New York City Mayor and billionaire businessman Bloomberg came in second in the poll with 19%, followed closely by former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Buttigieg, who polled at 18%. Massachusetts Sen. Warren polled at 15%.
Six percent of poll respondents said they would vote for former Vice President Joe Biden, and 4% said they would vote for Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Eight percent said they were not sure and 1% said they would vote for some other candidate.
Of the 298 respondents, 66% were Democrats and 6% were Republicans, with unaffiliated voters making up the remaining 27%. In Utah, the Democratic primary is open to any voter whether or not they are a registered Democrat.
Sanders won Utah in the Democratic primary in 2016, beating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with nearly 80% of the vote. He is scheduled to hold a rally at the Utah State Fairpark on Monday before the Super Tuesday vote.
Sanders is considered the national frontrunner for the nomination following primary wins in New Hampshire and Nevada, as well as essentially tying with Buttigieg in the Iowa primary.
Bloomberg is also among the candidates running for the Democratic nomination to visit Utah in the months leading up to Super Tuesday. He visited Utah for a rally Feb. 20 and has spent millions on ads and staff in the state.
Buttigieg, Warren, and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who was not listed in Thursday’s poll, also have visited Utah recently.
Gabbard held events in Salt Lake City on Feb. 21, and Buttigieg was in town for a rally on Presidents Day. Warren made a campaign stop in Utah last year.
The next state to vote will be South Carolina, which will hold its presidential primary Saturday. Biden is ahead in most polls in that state.
