COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A forensic psychologist from Missouri who has worked with national groups on management of sex offenders has been charged with sexually abusing two boys.
Kurt M. Bumby, 50, of Columbia, was charged Thursday in Boone County with two counts of statutory sodomy. He was charged in November in St. Louis County with two counts of sodomy.
Bond was set at $100,000 cash-only in both the Boone County and St. Louis County cases. Online court records do not show that he has been arrested in either county.
Charging documents involving the Boone County case say a middle school student told Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. E.T. Bartel that he was a friend of Bumby's children and often spent nights at their home. The victim said Bumby sexually abused him several times at Bumby's home between between 2008 and 2015, The Columbia Daily Tribune reported.
In the St. Louis case, prosecutors allege Bumby molested a boy after becoming friends with his family. That abuse allegedly occurred between 1988 and 1994, when Bumby was a student at the University of Missouri, according to charging documents.
Bumby in 2003 began working with the Center for Effective Public Policy, where he made presentations across the country on the rehabilitation and recidivism of sex offenders. As part of those duties, he has been the director of the Center for Sex Offender Management.
Madeline Carter, an official at the Center for Effective Public Policy, said Friday that Bumby left the organization on Jan. 1.
Bumby also was a psychologist at Missouri's Fulton State Hospital in 1997 and a principal assistant to the director of the Division of Youth Services from about 1999 to 2003.
Bumby's attorney, Joel Schwartz, told the Daily Tribune on Friday that the allegations would be addressed in the appropriate venue.
