SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — A basketball team huddled in a stinky locker room after a school shooting as they waited for word that it was safe and feared a gunman might burst through the doors.
The junior varsity team relied on text messages for news about what was going on Thursday at a Southern California high school. But information wasn’t fully reliable.
Authorities say a student opened fire at Saugus High School, killing two students and wounding three others before shooting himself in the head on his 16th birthday.
Basketball player Noah Sanchez, son of Marcio Sanchez, an Associated Press photographer, says the locker room smelled foul, but time passed quickly before sheriff’s deputies escorted the boys back into the gym and released them to meet their parents.
