SALT LAKE CITY — A Price man accused of running over a dog that was chasing his chickens now faces a criminal charge.

Lonnie Carl Campbell, 63, was charged in 7th District Court Tuesday with torture of a companion animal, a third-degree felony.

On Feb. 17, a man was walking his Alaskan malamute named Kain along the railroad tracks near 400 East and 400 South in Price, when “the dog pulled away from the victim and entered the backyard of a residence. ... The victim wasn’t able to maintain his hold on the dog’s leash due to the dog’s instinct to run after the chicken located in the backyard,” according to a police affidavit.

Campbell, who said he was in a workshop, told police he observed the dog chasing his chickens and then “take a chicken and leave the property,” the affidavit states.

“Lonnie said he became angry, so he got into his truck and started chasing the dog. Lonnie said he intended to catch up to the dog and hit it in the head. Lonnie said he wanted to hurt the dog. Lonnie said he was able to catch up to the dog and run his vehicle over the top of it,” according to the affidavit.

“Lonnie said he knew he probably killed the dog. Lonnie also explained that he lost his temper and shouldn’t have. Lonnie considers his chicken as a pet.”

Kain, who still had his collar and leash attached, was found deceased between a quarter-mile to a half-mile away from Campbell’s property.

“The path Lonnie had to take to accomplish running this dog over was not a designated roadway. This was alongside the railroad tracks through gravel and brush. The victim was so upset and distraught over his dog being killed he wasn’t able to provide a written statement, but advised he paid $650 for his dog Kain. Lonnie’s chicken was found just outside his property and was alive. The chicken appeared to be fine,” police wrote in the affidavit.

“I advised Lonnie that he was under arrest for aggravated animal cruelty because he intentionally killed this dog without having a legal privilege to do so.”
