SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper successfully stopped a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way on I-80 Sunday before anyone was seriously injured.
Tux Chavez Cleyver Gustavo, 28, was arrested for investigation of two counts of DUI, having an open container in a vehicle, and not having a license or insurance.
The incident happened about 11 p.m. on I-80 near the Great Saltair. Gustavo was traveling east in the westbound lanes, according to a statement from the UHP. He was traveling at “slower speeds,” the UHP stated.
When Gustavo ignored the trooper’s lights and sirens signaling him pull over, the trooper performed a PIT maneuver on the vehicle, using his car to hit the rear of Gustavo’s vehicle causing it to spin out and stop, according to the UHP.
“Although the crash was minor, the trooper’s car was disabled. The driver and the trooper were both checked at the scene and cleared by medical,” the UHP stated.
Inside Gustavo’s vehicle, troopers noticed an open alcoholic beverage container in the center console and an empty container on the floor, according to a police affidavit.
“Due to the quick action of the motorist that called 911, the professionalism of the highway patrol dispatch and the state troopers this incident could have ended much worse,” the UHP stated.
