SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will break ground on the Layton Utah Temple on May 30, 2020, according to a news release issued by the church Thursday.
The groundbreaking will be broadcast to stake centers in the surrounding area and attendance to the service will be by invitation only, the church said.
The 87,000-square-foot, three-story temple, which was announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 1, 2018, as part of the church’s general conference weekend, will serve as Davis County’s second temple. It will be built on an 11.8-acre lot at the corner of Oak Hills Drive and Rosewood Lane.
In Oct. 2019, the church released a rendering of the Layton Temple as the church worked to file public documents connected to the temple’s design.
The temple will have a “tremendous” effect on Layton City, Layton Mayor Joy Petro told KSL in April 2018 when she was a city councilwoman. The new temple “fills the gap” between the church’s Bountiful and Ogden temples. The Bountiful Temple has since seen an increase in traffic due to the Salt Lake Temple closing for four years for renovation work.
The church currently has 17 operating temples in Utah and an additional six, including Layton, have been announced. Other announced temples include Orem, Saratoga Springs, Taylorsville, Tooele Valley and Washington County.
The church also announced Thursday groundbreaking dates for the Richmond Virginia Temple, which will take place on April 11, 2020, and the Alabang Philippines Temple, which will take place on May 2, 2020.
Latter-day Saints believe temples to be “houses of the Lord,” and are seen as different from the regular meetinghouses, or chapels, where members of the church meet each Sunday.
