MURRAY — One man is in the hospital and a woman was arrested after the vehicle they were in crashed while fleeing police on Thursday night.

Unified Police Department Sgt. Melodie Gray said UPD's Taylorsville street crime unit found Salt Lake City native Makayla Lopshire, 27, who was wanted on several felony warrants, at a Walmart. They attempted to take her into custody, but she fled the area.

Gray said the unit did not pursue a chase but followed Lopshire at a distance in their unmarked cars. "At about 70 South and 1300 West, they attempted to spike her and she did flee at that time and she hit a vehicle," she said.

Lopshire ran a red light at the intersection of State Street and Winchester Street, Murray Police Sgt. Alisha Richmond said.

"At the same time, the victim vehicle was turning left to go north to go on State Street from the left-bound lane intersection," where it was struck by the fleeing vehicle, Richmond said.

Lopshire's vehicle then caught fire but was extinguished quickly; both directions of the intersection were closed by the accident. It has since been reopened.

Lopshire fled the vehicle on foot, leaving the injured male passenger inside, Gray said. Officials were then able to take her into custody.

Richmond believes the victim's vehicle was occupied by at least one adult and a 1-year-old child, though neither sustained injuries.
