Wildfire updates: Fires in Box Elder, Utah counties grow

SPRINGVILLE — Two wildfires continued to grow Tuesday as a large portion of Utah was under a red flag warning.

Gusting winds, as well as hot and dry conditions, means high fire danger and potential for rapid fire spreading, according to Utah fire officials.

Crews were expected to use a helicopter and aircraft Tuesday to help fight a wildfire burning close to homes east of Springville, officials said.

The Round Peak Fire was reported just after 10 p.m. Monday and was burning in brush and grass, according to Utah fire officials. They believe it may be human caused and due to a campfire that got out of control.

The flames are burning above and about a half a mile away from some nearby homes.

Fire personnel ordered three 20-person crews, three engines, one helicopter and two single engine aircraft to help fight the fire.

Round Peak Fire near Springville grows; officials say it is human-caused

U.S. Forest Service officials say a fire that began Monday evening east of Springville in Utah County grew to 247 acres Tuesday and was 5% contained by Tuesday evening. Forest Service officials also confirmed in a news release the Round Peak Fire was caused by a campfire and is still under investigation. Crews were making good progress on the fire Tuesday evening, according to officials.

As of 6:30 a.m., the fire was pushing upward away from the homes, according to KSL TV Reporter Felicia Martinez. There are no evacuations currently in effect in the fire area. Fire damages home, cars in Gusher, Uintah County

A fire was reported about 2:45 p.m. at about 10000 South on U.S. Highway 40 near Gusher, Uintah County. Crews arrived to smoke and flames coming from a home and spreading to a shed, according to Chief Deputy Brian Fletcher with Uintah County Sheriff's Office. Several cars were destroyed, he said. The fire was quickly knocked down and no injuries were reported, Fletcher said. The cause is under investigation, he said. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Fire officials in Springville not accepting donations for Round Peak Fire

Donations create more logistics work for fire personnel, so crews are not accepting any for the Round Peak Fire as of Tuesday, Springville police said in a Facebook post. The fire is burning above some homes east of Springville in Utah County. Fire crews have dispatched a Type 3 incident management team to the fire. Those teams are usually dispatched for extended emergency events and typically consist of 10-20 people from multiple agencies, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. The incident command center for the fire is at the Summit Center at 165 S. 700 East in Springville, police said. Aerial firefighting crews will be dipping into Bartholomew Pond near the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon to get water for the fire, police said. Utah County Fire, the Division of Natural Resources, Bureau of Land Management, Springville Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service officials have all responded to the fire, police said. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Radio Hill Fire in Box Elder County grows past 2,000 acres

A fire that sparked late Sunday evening near Tremonton in Box Elder County has grown past 2,000 acres, officials say. As of Tuesday, the Radio Hill Fire is 2,306 acres and is 30% contained, according to Box Elder County Spokesman Mitch Zundel. The fire is thought to be lightning-caused, Zundel said. There are currently no evacuations, and no structures or communities in the area are threatened, according to Zundel. There was very little fire movement overnight from Monday to Tuesday, he added. However, winds are expected to pick up on Tuesday evening. Over 70 firefighters are attacking the fire from the ground, and two helicopters are fighting from the air, Zundel said. Monday, a drone was spotted in the fire area, which forced fire officials to briefly cease air operations, according to Zundel. People are asked to keep drones away from the fire area so crews can continue to operate, he said.
