SPANISH FORK — One woman is dead after the car she was a passenger in was hit by a Pathfinder that went on to hit a motorcycle and one other car Monday night at the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and Spanish Fork Parkway, officials say.
A man in his 60s driving a Nissan Pathfinder on U.S. Highway 6 appeared to suffer a medical episode and rear-ended a Porsche that was stopped in a left hand turn lane about 7:45 p.m, according to Spanish Fork Police Lt. Brandon Anderson. This impact caused that car to rear-end a stopped motorcycle in front of it, Anderson said.
The Pathfinder, after hitting the Porsche, continued on eastbound and hit a westbound car that was stopped in the left hand turn lane on U.S. Highway 6, Anderson said.
The driver of the Porsche, a man in his 50s, and the passenger, a woman whose age was not released, were transported to the hospital, police said. The passenger later died of her injuries at the hospital, Anderson said.
The condition of the Porsche’s driver wasn’t immediately available.
Both people on the motorcycle, a man and woman, were ejected from the bike and were transported to a hospital via ambulance. The extent of their injuries wasn’t immediately known, Anderson said.
The driver of the second car the Pathfinder hit suffered minor injuries and was released, he said.
The condition of the Pathfinder’s driver wasn’t immediately available.
Eastbound traffic into Spanish Fork Canyon was closed starting at 7:45 p.m. but was expected to open Monday evening. Westbound traffic remained steady with one lane open, Anderson said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation and at this point police don’t suspect alcohol was involved, Anderson said. A beer can was found on scene, but Anderson said it appears it was unopened and just happened to be in one of the cars.
Anderson also said it didn’t appear the driver of the Pathfinder slowed down before rear-ending the Porsche.
Additional information, including the names of the individuals involved in the crash, was not immediately released.
