HERRIMAN — A 17-year-old is in critical condition after he crashed his motorcycle into a dump truck on Mountain View Corridor Monday morning, according to officials.

Witnesses said a black motorcycle sped past vehicles on the shoulder of the road near 12300 South, crossed through the shoulder of the 12600 South intersection, drove around another vehicle at 12800 South, then crashed into the rear end of the dump truck hauling a pup trailer, according to Herriman Police Lt. Cody Stromberg.

Herriman police responded to reports of the crash about 7:20 a.m. The 17-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital in a medical helicopter in "extremely critical condition with severe head trauma," Stromberg confirmed. The teen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, he added.

Southbound Mountain View Corridor closed from 12600 South to 13400 South about 7:20 a.m. and reopened three hours later.

The crash is still under investigation, and officials are asking for the public's help to identify the dump truck involved in the crash. Police believe the driver of the dump truck did not feel the impact of the motorcycle on the trailer and drove off before authorities arrived.

"We are asking for anyone who was operating a dump truck pulling a pup trailer southbound on Mountain View Corridor near 12600 South between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. this morning to please check the rear end of their pup trailer for damage and reach out to us at 801-840-4000," Stromberg said.

Anyone driving in the area who may have witnessed the crash or circumstances leading up to it are also asked to contact the Herriman Police Department at the same number.
