OGDEN — A former Weber County dentist who was sentenced to home confinement last month after pleading guilty in a child pornography case died Sunday, according to court records.

Daniel Patrick Alston, 72, of South Ogden, died from complications of a heart attack, according to a report filed by Utah Adult and Probation Monday.

The report stated Alston had driven himself to McKay-Dee Hospital late Sunday afternoon and complained of chest pains. Despite efforts from the hospital staff, Alston died at the hospital Sunday night.

Alston was sentenced to 55 days of home confinement and placed on 48 months probation on Feb. 7 after pleading guilty to five amended counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, each third-degree felonies, last December.

In February 2018, Alston was charged in 2nd District Court with 10 second-degree felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor after prosecutors alleged he downloaded child pornography. Prosecutors added Alston was a practicing dentist at the time and said he had “access to children on a regular basis” at the time he was arrested.

The AP&P report stated Alston had retired from dentistry. It also noted Alston was still serving home confinement and was enrolled in required therapy sessions at the time of his death.

Court records show the state officially closed the case Monday.
