SALT LAKE CITY — A man who was scheduled to be released from jail in four months will likely be staying longer after allegedly stealing a truck and running away from an inmate work crew.
Joshua Michael Aders, 32, was rearrested by Adult Probation and Parole agents in Farmington on Monday.
On Thursday, Aders, who was serving a 38-week sentence at the Cache County Jail for fraud, theft and drug-related convictions, was working at the American West Heritage Center Farm in Wellsville when he fled, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office. He was part of a community work project that includes inmates with a history of good behavior who are allowed to volunteer for jobs outside the jail, the sheriff's office stated.
On Thursday, "Aders was given a urinalysis for drugs and tobacco, both of which he cannot consume while incarcerated. Aders tested positive for tobacco. During the course of the day he became upset and went missing," according to charging documents.
About 11:45 a.m., investigators believe Aders stole a 2005 Ford Ranger with an orange caution light on top and drove off, according to the sheriff's office.
The truck was later found in Salt Lake City, and Aders was arrested Monday in Farmington by parole agents, the sheriff's office stated. He was formally charged in 1st District Court on the same day he went missing with escape, a third-degree felony.
Aders recently moved to Utah from California, according to the sheriff's office, but his criminal record in the state dates back to 2004.
He was convicted of possessing a stolen vehicle and failing to stop at the command of law enforcement in one case in October, according to court records, and for forgery in another.
Aders was also convicted of escaping from custody in 2004 in Cache County, according to court records.
