SOUTH JORDAN — Police are investigating a "suspicious death" after the body of a woman who was reported missing out of Riverton was found next to her Jeep in a field in South Jordan Tuesday morning.
The body of Kelsey Stone, 26, was found in an open field near 6000 W. Lake Ave, according to South Jordan Police Sgt. Sam Winkler.
Stone was reported missing to Unified police after she was last seen on Monday. Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray said Stone’s family reported her missing about 11:30 p.m. after she didn’t show up to a Christmas concert that she was on her way to attend.
Stone last made contact with her family about 5 p.m. Monday. She wasn't heard from after that. Unified police briefly posted a missing person's flier online Tuesday morning seeking help locating her.
Shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday, South Jordan police responded to a report from a city worker that there was a woman on the ground outside of a black Jeep Liberty in a field near a Daybreak community. When officers arrived, they discovered the woman was dead, Winkler said.
Winkler added the woman's body was face down in the mud. The area where her body was found was described as a "quiet area" near a new development in Daybreak, where construction has been happening.
The body was identified as Stone within a few hours. Her body was taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death.
Officials are calling Stone's death "suspicious." However, police did not say whether there were obvious signs of trauma to her body. Police spent most of Tuesday combing through Stone's Jeep Liberty to see if there was any evidence or signs that someone else was in the vehicle.
"Based on the circumstances that she was found outside of her vehicle face down, the whole thing is suspicious until we hear one way or the other from the Medical Examiner's Office," Winkler said.
A member of Stone's family declined to speak to KSL Monday.
