SALT LAKE CITY — A restaurant closed in Riverton this week due to multiple health violations.

J&C House, at 12564 S. Rhetski Lane, closed Thursday after a routine inspection, according to a report on the Salt Lake County Health Department’s website. Health officials reinstated the restaurant’s permit on Friday after a follow-up inspection, the report stated.

Health department officials typically suspend restaurant licenses and force the closure of an establishment about 50 times a year, about one closure per week, according to health department spokesman Nicholas Rupp.

Health officials found 40 violations when they visited J&C House on Thursday, according to the report. A home improvement-style drill was being used for food preparation, and fly strips were in use above food prep areas, the report states.

Various foods were also being stored at temperatures outside the required hot and cold food ranges, including chicken, ham, eggs and cooked rice. Health officials reported there was not sufficient storage space for cold foods in the restaurant, the report states.

Employees were also handling ready-to-eat foods with bare hands, according to the report. Various surfaces in the restaurant were unclean.

After finding 40 violations Thursday, health officials returned Friday and found only five violations at the restaurant, and all were addressed on-site during the visit, health department records show.
