Wildfire updates: Crews contain several of 30 new lightning-caused fires as Peavine Fire nears 4K acres

SALT LAKE CITY — Wildfires continue to burn across the Beehive State, including the Peavine Fire which was close to 4,000 acres as of Monday, according to officials.

Lightning also caused a handful of new fire over the weekend. At least 30 fires started in Box Elder County when a powerful thunderstorm moved through the area Sunday evening.

The Peavine Fire, first reported July 16 at 3 acres, was caused by lightning and was 20% contained as of Monday, according to U.S. Forest Service officials. The fire was measured at 3,904 acres Friday and was burning about 22 miles west of Blanding.

The Poison Canyon Fire, first reported July 26, was also caused by lightning and is 22 miles northwest of Blanding, according to officials. It was measured at 1,105 acres as of Friday.

There are currently 105 people fighting the Peavine Canyon Fire, while another 11 are assigned to the Poison Canyon Fire, according to a news release from forest service officials.

The Park Ridge Fire, first reported July 24, had burned about 90 acres by Friday and was surrounded by about 400 acres of control lines. This fire, which was caused by lightning, is about 10 miles south of Grover, Wayne County, and a containment percentage wasn’t immediately available.
