SALT LAKE CITY — Five new movies are scheduled to start shooting in Utah this summer, according to Utah Film Commission.
The Governor's Office of Economic Development Board approved the five new state film incentive projects, estimated to bring about $9.3 million and more than 300 jobs to the Beehive State, the Utah Film Commission announced Thursday.
"Unstoppable"
Approved under the Motion Picture Incentive Program, the film is based on the true story Anthony Robles, a wrestler and motivational speaker born without his right leg, according to Utah Film Commission. Filming is slated to start in September, but the exact Utah locations have not yet been confirmed. It's estimated the production will spend an estimated $6.72 million in the state and hire 110 locals for cast and crew.
"Echo Boomers"
Variety reported the movie is based on a true story where a group of people in their twenties break into and steal from rich people's homes. Shooting for this narrative feature will begin in August all around Salt Lake County and Utah Film Commission estimated its production will spend $1.26 million in the state.
The movie, approved under the Motion Picture Incentive Program, stars Michael Shannon, who some may recognize from the 2017 award-winning film "The Shape of Water," and Britt Robertson, who starred in the 2015 movie "Tomorrowland."
“It is with great excitement that I return to Utah to produce Echo Boomers, my third film shot in this beautiful state where the level of professionalism of both cast and crew is top notch and some of the best in the world," Lucas Jarach, producer for the film, said in a Utah Film Commission news release.
"The Nameless Days"
This horror film is estimated to spend about $650,000 in the state and will begin shooting this summer in Tooele County, according to a Utah Film Commission news release. The movie is co-directed by Andrew Mexham and Matthew Whedon, who worked on the horror film "Behind You," the release stated.
"Dreamland"
This multi-part series is directed by Utah filmmakers and was approved under the Community Film Incentive, according to Utah Film Commission officials. It will be shot in Utah and Salt Lake counties beginning in August and its estimated production will spend $400,000 in the state.
"Blackout"
This thriller will be filmed in Salt Lake and Utah counties beginning in July, according to Utah Film Commission. Its production is estimated to bring about $286,500 to the state's economy. “I love making movies here in Utah," John Lyde, director of the film, said in a news release. "The hardworking crews know what they are doing and make filmmaking enjoyable." Lyde also worked on the films "The Christmas Apron" and "The Outpost," according to Utah Film Commission news release.
These five new films will join the ranks with several well-known movies filmed in Utah, such as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sandlot," and "Footloose."
