THE STAGE — The Broadway musical "Hamilton" has become a worldwide phenomenon. The show has won 11 Tony Awards in addition to Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Audiences spent thousands of dollars for a single ticket, at times, to see the original cast on Broadway, but now you can watch it in your own home thanks to Disney+.
Disney just released a trailer for the film version of the stage musical, and it came with an MPAA rating of PG-13. Those who have seen the show or listened to the soundtrack know that the so-called "R-rated word" is said more than once, which would make it seem like the film version would receive an R and not a PG-13. Not only that, many were wondering if the family-friendly streaming service would censor the blockbuster musical. Now we have our answer.
The creator and star of "Hamilton," Lin-Manuel Miranda took to Twitter to explain how the R-rated word would be treated on Disney+. He explained that when the show debuts on the platform, everyone will get "the whole show, every note & scene, & a 1-minute countdown clock during intermission (bathroom!)"
He also tweeted that the MPAA has a "hard rule" about language and that having more than one of those R-rated words gets a film an automatic R rating. He said there are three utterances of the word in the show, and they have muted over one and played a record scratch over another. That means there is still one utterance of the word in the Disney+ version, which is why it has the PG-13 rating.
On his Twitter account Miranda lists the exact lines that are muted and played over, but if you’re a purist and want to hear the show exactly how it was written Miranda wrote, "You can sing whatever you like at home (even synch up the album)!"
The PG-13 film version of the musical will be available on Disney+ on July 3.
