KAMAS, Summit County — Officials are asking for the public’s help to locate a man who did not return to his campsite in Summit County on Wednesday evening.

Ray Humpherys, of South Jordan, was camping in the Hidden Lake area in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, according to an emailed statement from Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez.

Family members said he was due back at camp about 10 p.m. Wednesday but did not return at that time, according to Martinez.

Hidden Lake is north of the Crystal Lake trailhead area, west of Mirror Lake Highway.

Family members said they were camping about 40 yards away from the lake, and Humpherys had gone to get water for the fire from the lake but didn't come back, according to Summit County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Wright.

The family was on an annual backpacking trip, and Humpherys is in healthy hiking shape, Wright said.

Humpherys, 66, is described as 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 190 pounds with short gray hair. He was last seen wearing a black jacket and vest, a gray shirt with tan pants and a hat, according to Martinez.

Search teams are looking for Humpherys on ground and horseback, and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter is also helping search, Martinez said. The search was scheduled to continue until nightfall on Thursday before resuming at 7 a.m. Friday, Wright said.

Anyone with information about Humpherys is asked to call the Summit County Sheriff’s Office at 435-615-3600.
