PROVO — The second-longest football series in state history has been given two more years.

BYU and Utah State jointly announced Thursday an extension to their longstanding football series that will add two games through the 2022 football season.

The teams will meet Oct. 1, 2021, at Maverik Stadium in Logan, with a return trip scheduled for Sept. 30, 2022, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. Both meetings will be played on Friday night, continuing another in-state tradition of scheduling the game ahead of the LDS Church’s general conference weekend.

"There’s a lot of history and tradition in our longstanding football series with Utah State," BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a statement. "I appreciated working with John Hartwell to further extend the series into the future. I have loved the in-state rivalry with USU as a player, coach and now as an administrator. I look forward to these future games."

The team’s 2018 meeting will take place Oct. 5 and will be the 87th meeting all-time between the two schools. The Cougars have an all-time series record of 48-36-3 in a series that dates back to 1911 — BYU’s first official season of collegiate football. The Aggies are 19-17-2 against the Cougars in Logan.

Only the University of Utah has played either team more. The Utes have faced BYU 92 times and the Aggies 112 times.

The series has also been among the most consistently played in college football, taking a three-year break just twice from 1943-45 and 2003-05, with added halts in 1995, 1998 and 2007.

BYU is the Aggies’ second nonconference opponent on their 2022 scheduling, joining Alabama, which the Aggies announced Wednesday will be played in Tuscaloosa with a guaranteed payout of nearly $2 million.

BYU’s 2021 schedule also includes games against Arizona, Utah, Arizona State, South Florida, Boise State, Washington State, Virginia, Georgia Southern, Southern California and Baylor.
