RIVERTON — A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a pickup truck Sunday evening, officials report.

The crash took place near 11800 S. 3840 West shortly before 7:45 p.m., according to Unified police detective Chuck Malm.

The motorcyclist, a 38-year-old man, was traveling east on 11800 South when a westbound pickup truck made a left-hand turn onto 3840 West in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle then impacted the passenger’s side of the truck and became pinned underneath the vehicle along with the rider, Malm said.

“From the time of the accident, it was about 10-15 minutes before Unified Fire was able to extract him from underneath the truck,” Malm said.

Paramedics were working to transport the man to an area hospital via LifeFlight but he died before the medical helicopter was able to leave the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but Malm said officials believe the sun’s glare at that time of the day may have been a contributor.

Both directions of 11800 South are closed from 3600 West to 4000 West while officials investigate.

As the temperature gets warmer and more people are expected to be on motorcycles and bicycles, Malm encouraged drivers to be “extra vigilant.”
