CENTERVILLE — The residents of two buildings at an apartment complex in Centerville were evacuated for several hours Monday afternoon after a gas leak was discovered in the area, officials said.

The natural gas leak was reported just before 12:30 p.m. near the Legacy Crossing Apartments at 1162 W. 200 North, according to Centerville Police Chief Paul Child. The gas company, Dominion Energy, responded to the scene after reports of “an odor of gas and they detected dangerous levels of gas in the ground,” Child said.

Residents of two of the apartment buildings, a total of 128 units, were evacuated and sent to the nearby Megaplex Theater, according to Child. The majority of the apartments were not occupied at the time of the leak, but some had animals inside. Davis County Animal Control responded to assist residents with evacuating their pets.

The movie theater and other nearby businesses were not affected by the gas leak, and a temporary evacuation center was set up at a conference center in the Megaplex, Child said.

The buildings were cleared by Dominion Energy shortly before 6:30 p.m. and residents were allowed to return home. A cause for the gas leak was not immediately available.

Legacy Crossing Boulevard was also closed for a time during the evacuation, but 200 North remained open for access to businesses in the area, police said.
