SALT LAKE CITY — The UMBC Retrievers had one of the biggest upsets in the history of college basketball by defeating No. 1 seed Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
It was the first time a No. 1 seed has lost in the first round. This set the Twitter world on fire. That win mixed with all of the other Day 2 craziness made this one of the most memorable day twos in March Madness history.
First of all, if you’re wondering where in the world UMBC is or what in the world UMBC stands for, you’re not the only one.
This was only the second NCAA Tournament appearance in the history of University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Tweets about the UMBC Retrievers were everywhere. Some of the tweets were funny and based on Teen Wolf due to the similarity of the jerseys.
Other tweets were pretty emotional.
Some others were savage.
The second biggest shock of the day came when the No. 13 seed Marshall beat the No. 4 seed Wichita State 81-75. This was Marshall’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 31 years as well as their first ever win in the tournament.
What was possibly even more shocking than the game was the length of the last minute of play.
The Walking Dead and NFL reporter, Chris Burke decided to get in on the Marshall upset fun.
Another little known fact about Marshall is that they are coached by Dan D’Antoni, brother of Houston Rocket head coach Mike D’Antoni. After the game, Dan joked about how well Marshall is playing.
“Tell my brother we’d beat his team,” Dan D’Antoni said.
Even though Mike has the better team of the two brothers, Dan definitely wins the fashion contest between the two.
No. 2 seed, North Carolina, easily defeated the Lipscomb Bisons. Head coach Roy Williams was seen holding a baby. Naturally this was edited to him holding the NCAA championship trophy.
Tar Heel senior Theo Pinson posted yet another double-double in their win over the Bisons.
Lamentably, NCAA rules did not allow Butler’s mascot, Butler Blue III, inside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
The mascot responded to a post of a police dog inside of the arena.
The Bulldogs got the last laugh as they defeated No. 7 Arkansas 79-62.
The daughter of Nevada head coach, Eric Musselman was interviewed. When asked if she ever gives her dad advice she said. “Well sometimes I do, I say when you win you can go crazy, but when you lose, you’ve got to tone it down.”
After Nevada beat Texas in overtime, Musselman did exactly as his daughter told him.
Cincinnati’s Jarron Cumberland celebrated their win by updating the bracket. Cumberland had 27 points and eleven rebounds.
Bill Murray was babysitting during the Xavier Texas Southern game. Murray’s son, Luke, is an assistant coach for Xavier.
Xavier was able to win the game 102-83. Kerem Kanter, younger brother of former Jazz man, Enes Kanter threw in some fancy guard skills after Xavier was up by over 20 points.
No. 4 seeded Auburn got a scare from Bucknell, but thanks to two big threes and horrendous Bucknell free throw shooting, the Tigers were able to win 62-58.
Here is a look at what NCAA March Madness West Regional tournament balls look like.
Bucknell put up a fight against the Michigan State Spartans. Here Kimbal Mackenzie throws an alley-oop lob to Nana Foulland who finishes it off with a powerful slam.
Miles Bridges of Michigan State was a monster with 29 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in the No. 3’s takedown of the the No. 14 Bucknell Bison.
According to ncaa.com, there are no more perfect brackets remaining after the UMBC upset.
One bracket however somehow made it over twenty games before having a correct winner in their bracket.
This was definitely a crazy day in March Madness history, and while we might think it can’t get any crazier, just remember it is called March Madness for a reason.
