SALT LAKE CITY — Lone Peak proved to be too much for the Davis Darts in a 72-48 victory in the boys 6A state quarterfinals Thursday.
The game was all Lone Peak from the beginning as Davis struggled to stay in the game after the first couple of minutes.
“Davis is a good team, so the boys didn’t want to take it lightly,” said Lone Peak head coach David Evans.
Even though it was a 24-point win for the Knights, the team was not totally satisfied with how they played. Offensively, Lone Peak struggled, shooting only 39 percent for the game. But the Knights made up for some of their shooting struggles with their defense.
“We looked complacent, we missed several easy ones to start the third quarter, which is usually our best quarter,” Evans said. “I think that’s the best defensive game they may have played all year. And it was hard for Davis to get in their flow.”
Lone Peak, though, continued to play hard despite the poor shooting.
“I never want a player to feel like they can’t shoot the ball,” Evans said. “I’m confident in them, and if they’re open, I want them to shoot it.”
Although Lone Peak is a potent offensive team, Evans said he believes defense will be what it needs to focus on going forward.
“Defense is the most important thing right now, because shots are going to fall, and they’re not going to fall, and so we’ve got to be ready defensively just to hang in every single game,” Evans said.
Leading the game for the Knights was Steven Ashworth and Jaxon Pollard. Ashworth was close to a triple-double with 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Pollard, who is in his fourth game back after tearing his ACL, scored 14 points on 67 percent shooting.
“We play hard, we play good defense and it leads into our offense, we play fast, have fun, it’s how we play,” Pollard said.
