ELK RIDGE, Utah County — A 44-year-old Provo woman is accused of robbing an assisted living center in Elk Ridge where she used to work.
Early Wednesday morning, a woman identified by authorities as Becky Jean Golly entered Elk Ridge Assisted Living wearing all black clothing and her face covered, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon in a news release.
Golly pointed a handgun at an employee’s face, ordered her to put shaving cream on a security camera and insisted the employee unlock a medication storage box, authorities said in the release.
The employee wasn’t able to open the medication box, which frustrated Golly, officials said. Golly then took two employees' backpacks and fled the facility.
While this was happening, another employee locked herself in a room and called police.
Officers eventually caught up to Golly after looking at surveillance video, and she admitted her involvement during an interview, according to the release.
After obtaining a search warrant, authorities found drugs in Golly’s home and car. Officials also discovered Golly had transferred $2,000 into her bank account from a stolen credit card that was inside one of the backpacks she took from the assisted living center.
Golly was fired from the assisted living center about six weeks ago, according to the facility’s owner, Chris Hermansen. Although Hermansen could not speak on the reason for her termination, he said she worked there as a cook for about one month.
Golly has a history of convictions, including theft, fraud and drug-related charges, according to the release. Hermansen said Golly passed a background check to work at the assisted living facility.
Authorities confirmed no employees or residents were injured during Wednesday’s attempted robbery.
“I think in this day and age you can never be too prepared,” Hermansen said. “That’s why we take the necessary measures, to not so much prevent, but to have the best outcome when something like this does occur.”
Hermansen added both employees who were present during the incident handled the situation “perfectly.”
She was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery or threatened use of weapon, a first-degree felony; financial transaction with intent to defraud, a third-degree felony; and several related charges.
On Thursday, Golly was being held on a $50,000 cash bail.
