THE PAST — Believe it or not, it’s 2018 and that means 1998 was 20 years ago. I know that’s an obvious statement, but 1998 just doesn’t seem that long ago to me so it’s hard to fathom that two decades have already passed.

While the year 1998 may or may not seem like a long time ago to some of you, it may surprise you to hear about some of the movies turning 20 years old this year.

Here’s a look at some of your favorite films that are turning the big 20 in 2018:

“A Bug’s Life”

Pixar took the world by storm in 1995 with “Toy Story” and today they basically own the world. Well, Disney does at least, but that’s a different conversation. But in 1998, Pixar gave us “A Bug’s Life.” This one hasn’t had the lasting power that many of Pixar’s films do, but it’s still a solid addition to their catalog and it turns 20 this November.

“Mulan”

Let’s keep rolling with the Disney animation train, shall we? Another animated juggernaut released in 1998 was “Mulan.” The action-adventure is a favorite in my home with my kids and they don’t seem to mind at all that it was released 20 years ago come June.

“Armageddon”

Let’s face it, “Armageddon” isn’t exactly a good movie, but man is it entertaining. Watching Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck save the world in a spaceship is Hollywood gold. It was 20 years ago and yet it is still entertaining us today. This movie that seems to play on either TNT or TBS every other month will turn 20 this July.

“The Mask of Zorro”

I remember heading to the theater to see “The Mask of Zorro” like it was yesterday, and two things stood out prominently in my mind: Catherine Zeta-Jones was the classiest woman I’d ever seen and “The Mask of Zorro” was one of the most fun movies I’d ever seen.

I don’t know if the movie has aged as well as I would have liked, but I’ll still watch it time and again and still be entertained. “The Mask of Zorro” will turn 20 this July as well.

“The Truman Show”

When “The Truman Show” was headed to theaters it carried an incredible amount of buzz considering the ever-wacky and over-the-top Jim Carrey was going to be taking on a more serious role than he had in the past. Many were nervous about the rubber-faced comedian taking on a drama, but all those worries were put to rest once the film was released, and the world found out that Jim Carrey could really act.

“The Truman Show” is still a very poignant and relevant film— maybe even more so today than when it was released. The film will turn 20 in June.

“The Wedding Singer”

Who remembers the time when people got excited about an Adam Sandler movie heading to theaters? Well, if you do, then you remember the '90s and early 2000s. In fact, 1998 was a good year for Sandler considering both “The Wedding Singer” and “The Waterboy” hit theaters. Both films were a huge success, but “The Wedding Singer” was the better film. It will turn 20 in February.

“Rush Hour”

Today, we’ll sit our kids down and tell them there once was a time when people flocked to the theater to see a movie starring Chris Tucker. They won’t believe us, but it was true. Then, add in Jackie Chan to that equation and it equaled box office immortality. “Rush Hour” was released 20 years ago this September and racked in more than $240 million worldwide.

“You’ve Got Mail”

In 1993, audiences fell in love with the on-screen chemistry of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in “Sleepless in Seattle.” Fast forward five years and audiences couldn’t wait to see it happen all over again in “You’ve Got Mail.”

The film isn’t terrible, but looking at the computers and use of AOL dates the movie horribly and makes it feel like it’s 20 years old. The film will hit that milestone this December.

“The Prince of Egypt”

For years Disney has owned the animated-movie landscape. With the help of Pixar, they still have a strong hold on it, but Dreamworks has managed to make a splash in that area and much of it started in 1998 with “The Prince of Egypt.”

The family film was a big risk considering it had a more serious tone, retold a Biblical tale and wasn’t from Disney, but none of that mattered. The film was a huge success and is still loved by both children and adults all over the world.

The film made more than $218 million worldwide and will turn 20 this December.

“Saving Private Ryan”

When “Saving Private Ryan” hit theaters, it was all anyone could talk about due to the genius of Steven Spielberg’s directing, the intensity of the scenes and the brilliance of the acting. It is regarded as one of the greatest war films of all time and it will be 20 years in July that it changed cinematic history.
