PARK CITY — A man who allegedly brandished a gun near two Park City schools, prompting temporary lockdowns, was detained by police on Tuesday.

A high school student spotted the man in the field between Park City High School and McPolin Elementary School about 9:30 a.m., according to police. The student notified school administrators who immediately placed the schools on lockdown.

Police located the man about 40 minutes later in the 1700 block of Kearns Boulevard. He was detained and released, according to police, who said "appropriate charges are being screened" by Park City prosecutors.

Park City Police Capt. Phil Kirk confirmed that the man, in his 30s, was in possession of a handgun. Investigators do not believe the man had any intent of making any type of threat, he said, though he declined to go into specifics Tuesday about what the man was doing.

Police and the school district said the incident is a good example of why it's important for students who see something, to say something.

"We're very appreciative of the student seeing something suspicious and immediately reporting it," Kirk said.
