KAYSVILLE — A crash that downed power lines and briefly closed I-15 in all directions on Saturday morning will force an overnight closure of the freeway at 200 North, police said.

The early morning crash also caused power outages for parts of the city throughout the day, according to Utah Department of Transportation officials.

In a Facebook post Saturday evening, the Kaysville Police Department said I-15 at 200 North will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. as city officials work to restore power in the area. Motorists are asked to plan accordingly.

A driver crashed into a power pole on 200 North near the interstate exit at about 4 a.m. Saturday, Kaysville City Mayor Steve Hiatt said. Alcohol might have been a factor in the crash, he said.

Jason Philip Exley, 26, was arrested for investigation of DUI and reckless driving. He was taken to a local hospital after the crash, but later was released and booked into jail.

Exley was headed north on I-15 when he took the exit for 200 North, Hiatt said. After exiting, Exley apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck a power pole nearby, according to Hiatt.

"It was an incredible amount of force," Hiatt said of the crash.

Power lines were down for about eight power poles, causing much of Kaysville and West Kaysville to be without power on Saturday. By 11 a.m., some businesses had power restored, but several thousand residents remained in the dark, Hiatt said.

By noon, exit 328 to I-15 was reopened, but UDOT officials said drivers in the area should expect delays throughout the day.

The city's Veteran's Day program was canceled on Saturday due to the power outage affecting Davis High School.

A Mountain America Credit Union building also had damage because power lines whipped the windows of the building, Hiatt said.
