ROY — Two people escaped major injury after a single-engine plane crashed into a car while making an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Ogden-Hinckley Airport Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash occurred near 4500 South and 1900 West shortly before 1:40 p.m., Roy Police Sgt. Matt Gwynn said. Emergency responders found the plane on fire and a vehicle that had been struck when they arrived on scene.

The pilot of the plane, a 63-year-old man, was removed from the plane and transported to the hospital as a precaution. The driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old woman, was also taken to the hospital as a precaution, Gwynn said.

"It's a violent scene but everyone's OK," Gwynn said. "(The pilot) was walking. I believe he needed to get help out of the plane but he was talking to our investigators. He was talking to our paramedics.

"Usually in a case like this, you would expect someone to be injured and we're happy that was not the case today."

The cause of the crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, Gwynn added.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson said the plane was a Beechcraft A24 Sierra and the pilot attempted an emergency landing about one mile southwest of the airport it had departed from.

Audio from the airport's control tower indicates everything appeared normal when the pilot departed on a touch-and-go. However, moments after the plane departs, the traffic tower was unable to make radio contact with the plane despite multiple attempts.

Minutes later, another pilot radios in a report of a fire near an airport runway.

The crash was witnessed by several individuals, including Cami Hess, who said she was walking out of a gas station convenience store when she saw the plane struggling to gain altitude.

"I watched the plane and it was going like this," she said, moving her hands into a motion that the plane was wobbling, "and I was like 'that plane is going down' and the next thing you hear is the boom and the fire everywhere."

Authorities said the plane hit the car before crashing into the road. The crash closed 1900 West from 4400 South to 4800 South while authorities investigate the crash and clear the scene. The road was later reopened.

It is the second crash involving a plane taking off from Ogden-Hinckley Airport in less than two months. Four people were killed on July 26 after the plane they were in crash into I-15 in Riverdale.
