SALT LAKE CITY — A man wanted in connection with a shooting in Salt Lake City was arrested Wednesday night by federal agents.
Now, police say Juan Lorenzo Bernal, 39, a documented gang member originally from California who also goes by the moniker "Killer," faces potential federal charges.
Bernal was already charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with 16 counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.
On July 2, prosecutors say Bernal pulled up to another man's house, got out of his car and began shooting at him. The victim got into a car and drove away but was intercepted by Bernal again near 1200 West and 600 South where more rounds were fired, according to charging documents.
The victim was shot in the leg and his face was grazed.
Six shell casings were recovered by police at the intersection; 10 more were recovered in front of the house, and a bullet hole was found in the living room window, according to charging documents.
On Tuesday, agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives served a warrant on the Salt Lake residence where Bernal was believed to be staying and arrested him without incident, according to Salt Lake police. The ATF investigation was part of a separate investigation, said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. And based on evidence found in the house, Wilking said Bernal will likely be facing federal charges.
