SPANISH FORK — A 3-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car in Spanish Fork on Wednesday afternoon, according to Spanish Fork Police Lt. Matt Johnson.

Police and medical personnel were dispatched to 987 East 1420 South at about 3:06 p.m. Wednesday, Johnson said.

Upon arrival, officers determined that the boy was riding a low-profile bike and a neighbor who did not see the child backed over him. The four-door passenger car was moving at a low speed, Johnson said.

The boy was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, Johnson said.

"This is just a tragic accident. It's a tragedy for all involved," Johnson said.

Police said according to a witness at the scene, the boy moved into the path of the four-door passenger car before it hit him.

"There was no way the driver would have been able to see the child," Johnson said.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was distraught and was transported to a hospital to be evaluated.

No information was available on the child's identity as of 4 p.m. Wednesday. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
