SALT LAKE CITY — Traffic should be lighter than usual this Independence Day weekend, according to the Utah Department of Transportation, but drivers are encouraged to respect the few traffic restrictions that remain.

While UDOT will suspend construction and open all lanes to traffic from Friday until Tuesday, there are some areas where lane restrictions and traffic shifts will remain in effect, including:

  • I-215 from state Route 201 to 4700 South in Salt Lake County: The northbound lane split on I-215 will remain in place for the next several months. The speed limit is lowered to 60 miles per hour in the work zone while crews reconstruct the west belt.

  • I-15 from Brigham Road to Dixie Drive in St. George: All lanes are open on I-15, but lanes have been narrowed and traffic is shifted. The speed limit is reduced in the work zone between exit 4 (Brigham Road) and exit 5 (Dixie Drive) as crews widen the freeway and construct two new bridges.

  • I-70 from exit 37 to exit 40 in Richfield: Interstate 70 is reduced to one lane in each direction and the speed limit is reduced to 65 miles per hour. All traffic has shifted into the westbound lanes while construction begins on the eastbound lanes. Vehicles or loads over 12 feet wide are prohibited on the road while crews reconstruct the freeway and complete maintenance work.

Stadium of Fire traffic

Those attending Stadium of Fire at the LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday should remember that University Parkway is also under construction from Orem to Provo and that lanes narrow and shift through the work zone between Utah Valley University and University Avenue.

Drivers can use 800 North or Center Street in Orem as alternative routes, as well as University Avenue in Provo. However, University Avenue is also under construction which may cause delays. UDOT engineers will coordinate signal timing along the road to help traffic flow during the event.

Westbound I-80/Foothill Drive

Westbound I-80 to Foothill Drive will reopen for the first time Friday since its closure in May, though eastbound I-80 to Foothill Drive will remain closed until September.

Foothill Drive northbound will also open two lanes of traffic for Independence Day weekend instead of just one, though Foothill Drive to southbound I-215 will close July 5 until mid-September.
