SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two Saratoga Springs teenagers are being sent to juvenile court after police say their fireworks, lit in a restricted area outside of the state's legally allowed days, started a small fire this week.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday the boys, ages 14 and 16, lit a "ground flower" on Monday afternoon, sparking a fire that grew to 4.4 acres before firefighters managed to completely extinguish it nine hours later.

A parent of one of the boys reported the fire, according to police, which began on unincorporated county land near Saratoga Springs.

While the firework was legal, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said it may only be used during certain periods, including three days before and after July 4 and Pioneer Day.

Crews from Utah County, Saratoga Springs, Unified and Lehi fire departments responded to the fire.

While the fire was relatively small and took less than half a day to douse, Cannon said the cost of fighting it is estimated to be between $12,000 and $14,000.

Cannon noted that individuals responsible for causing fires in the state may be required to reimburse the cost of putting them out.

The teens were referred to juvenile court for infractions of lighting fireworks outside of allowed days and lighting fireworks in a restricted area, Cannon said.
