SARATOGA SPRINGS — Former Utah receiver Steve Smith Sr. was always a competitor — and always having fun. The former Baltimore Ravens standout retired from the NFL after 16 seasons, including 14 with the Panthers, and five Pro Bowl appearances.

And he’s still “talking trash,” according to former Ute teammate Jordan Gross.

“What do you expect? That’s what he’s been doing since he’s put on a football helmet, and with a set of golf clubs is no different,” Gross said in jest.

Don’t worry, the chatter cuts both ways.

“Jordan’s a nice guy, and I’m more of an outgoing guy. People assume I’m the only guy that talks trash,” Smith retorted.

“Jordan does it, too … Jordan’s full of snot.”

Smith is about to embark on a career in broadcasting with the NFL Network — so we thought we’d give him a test run on KSL TV after playing in the Utah Legends golf tournament, sponsored by the Ron McBride Foundation at Talon’s Cove Golf Club in Saratoga Springs.

But don't expect him to lose any of the candor that endeared him to fans in Salt Lake City, as well as North Carolina and Baltimore, for so many years. Smith plans to approach his broadcasting career with the same energy and effort of his football career — which is good news for the viewer.

“I’m 38 years old, played 16 years (in the NFL), and I don’t really care what you think about my career,” he said. “I’ve done it for so long, and so I could care less; I have the memories, the success and the fun with my teammates.

“All that other stuff: I could care less.”
