STORMVILLE — Ever since I was a kid, I've been fascinated by thunderstorms, and in particular, by lightning.

Once when I was visiting Bryce Canyon with my family, a thunderstorm started quickly approaching. We weren't familiar with just how fast storms can move and we thought we had a minute or two to wait before strolling back to our car to avoid getting soaked by rain.

We were wrong. If my memory is correct, within seconds the storm was upon us and we had to race back to our car as lightning was striking all around us. Now I prefer to enjoy thunderstorms while sitting safely indoors with a cup of hot cocoa, watching as Mother Nature lights up the sky with electricity in a beautiful, yet dangerous show.

That brings me to this video. The dash cam footage uploaded to YouTube shows what can only be described as a shocking moment brought on by lightning (I actually gasped out loud). All the action in the video happens within the first 20 seconds — I'll let you watch it to see for yourself.

Yesterday's Have You Seen This?

If this video doesn't make you want to brush up on your lightning safety tips, I don't know what will. According to the National Weather Service, 30 people on average are killed by lightning each year, a number that can hopefully decrease if everyone implements a few safety precautions.

Enjoy the video, review the safety tips and then share your craziest lightning experiences in the comments below.
