PROVO — Terry Nashif came to BYU as a freshman basketball player in 2001, fresh off a two-year mission for the LDS Church in Columbia, South Carolina.

More than 15 years later, he’s finally moving on.

An assistant coach who often ran the offense for BYU head coach Dave Rose, Nashif announced Thursday he was leaving the program to “pursue business opportunities,” according to a release from the school.

“Our time at BYU has been an amazing opportunity and experience for me and my family,” Nashif said. “Being associated with coach Rose, both as a player and a coach, has been one of the great honors of my life. I’m very excited for the future as I’ve decided it’s the best time to pursue opportunities outside of basketball.

“I’ll be forever grateful for my years at BYU.”

Nashif played point guard at BYU from 2001 until graduating in 2005, earning a reputation as a distributor and tireless on-ball defender. After exhausting his eligibility, he and his wife Kate stayed in Provo when Nashif accepted a position as director of basketball operations in 2005 and worked his way up to assistant head coach in 2016 after nine years on the bench.

BYU went 305-111 while Nashif was on the coaching staff, winning at least 20 games per year and securing four conference titles in the Mountain West.

“We are grateful for Terry, Katie, and their family for their hard work, dedication and sacrifice for BYU basketball,” Rose said in a statement. “Terry’s role has been vital to the consistency of our program. His presence will be missed within our staff and amongst our players. I have all the confidence in the world that Terry will be very successful in his future endeavors.”

With Nashif’s departure, Rose’s staff consists of associate head coach Tim LaComb, assistant Quincy Lewis, and director of basketball operations Andrew May, who previously coached at Salt Lake Community College from 2011-15. Former BYU standout Lee Cummard was also named a graduate assistant in 2016.
