OREM — Some students at Utah Valley University are at odds with the school's choice in toilet paper. They say it's way too thin and harsh, so they're asking facilities managers there to bring in some two-ply.

UVU uses sheer, one-ply toilet paper. But many students feel their tuition should buy more than that.

"To be honest, completely honest, the toilet paper isn't that good," said UVU student Dan Villegas. "To be honest, it feels like sandpaper. Like, it's really bad, and you have to crumple it together for it to at least (have an) effect."

Villegas said it's bad enough that more than 100 people have signed an online petition he created, asking the school to upgrade.

The toilet paper also has inspired some online videos, including one from BYU student Edgar Garcia and his friend Justin Bradford. They said it didn't take long to find people who were ready to complain.

"Just how thin it is," Garcia explained. "You rip it off, and you either can't pull it out or it just rips when you're taking it out of the roll."

People KSL talked to — both students and frequent visitors to the school — agreed the toilet paper needs another layer. "I don't feel very comfortable or safe or protected using it," said student Skyler Munson. "Maybe I'm privileged. Maybe I'm expecting too much." "Not even in third-world countries where I've been have I seen it like that," said Quinn Frehner. "It's pretty thin."

School administrators were unavailable to comment Friday because spring break is underway.

However, according to the school newspaper, facilities managers were set to start upgrading the toilet paper at UVU last month. Friday, KSL found thin, one-ply paper in classroom building restrooms, but two-ply paper in the UCCU Event Center restrooms.
