SALT LAKE CITY — A police pursuit of a driver on I-15 turned into a medical episode incident that briefly closed the freeway at Beck Street Friday morning, police said.

Unified police officials said a pursuit was started by one of its officers at about 10:30 a.m. and continued with Utah Highway Patrol troopers.

Police began pursuing a truck hauling a trailer that failed to stop for some officers, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said. The driver then traveled onto I-15 northbound where he was eventually stopped around Beck Street just before 11 a.m.

Royce said troopers then discovered the male driver was having a diabetic episode and an ambulance was called to the scene.

"As soon as we got the truck stopped that was pulling the trailer and we were able to approach the truck and able to figure out what was going on, we got the gentlemen out and realized that he was having a diabetic reaction," Royce said. "The most important thing to do then was to make sure he got medical attention. It turned very rapidly from a police action pursuit to a medical condition in a matter of seconds."

A Utah Department of Transportation camera showed the vehicle weaving across the lanes as police pursued the vehicle, which prompted a closure of the freeway temporarily as a safety precaution.

Two left lanes remained closed after the pursuit ended, according to UDOT, and were expected to be fully cleared by noon. Officials estimated it could cause some delays.

"We had to stop some traffic on both southbound and northbound for a minute but it's all open now and this gentleman got the medical attention that he needs," Royce said.

More information will be added as soon as it is made available.
