SALT LAKE CITY — It was all Skyline in the first game of the 4A girls quarterfinal games Thursday, upsetting No. 1 Alta 81-66.
Skyline jumped out to a 12-2 lead to start the game and never looked back. Alta cut the lead to six late in the third quarter on back-to-back 3-pointers from Kemery Martin, but Skyline tightened up its defense and quickly extended its lead.
“I think we stayed composed and we stayed together as a team, so that’s what helped us keep the lead,” said Skyline senior Hannah Anderl.
“We just talk about keeping our composure and we knew that they’d come back and make a run for it,” Skyline coach Lynette Schroeder said.
Anderl was a handful for Alta, finishing the game with 22 points and 15 rebounds. She was everywhere on the court and scored 14 of her points in the first half, while scoring her remaining eight at the free-throw line in the second half.
“I’m super proud of her,” Schroeder said. “She stepped up the way that I know she always can. She’s our leader, she’s our momentum changer in every way and she played her role to a tee today.
Skyline went 28-30 at the free-throw line in the second half, allowing the Eagles to extend the lead. Alta’s Kemery Martin fouled out with 3:21 left in the game, taking away one of the best shooters on the team. Martin finished the game with 14 points before fouling out.
Skyline lost by 10 points in its previous matchup with Alta. Anderl said the team wasn’t afraid of Alta’s high ranking for much of the season and “we wanted to come out and show them what we’re made of and that we can beat a No. 1 seed.”
Skyline will play the winner of the Springville-Timpview matchup in the 4A semifinal game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College.
