SALT LAKE CITY — Candy Cane Corner, a holiday store that assists families of The Road Home, Volunteers of America-Utah and YWCA Utah, needs toys to ensure children who have escaped domestic violence or are experiencing homelessness have holiday presents.

"We've never in the history of doing Candy Cane Corner, and we started it 19 years ago, not had toys. We are just not getting toys in for some reason," said Celeste Eggert, development director of the Road Home.

New, unwrapped toys for children ages 3-12 are needed, she said.

The storefront, which has operated each holiday season for the past two decades, allows clients of the three nonprofit agencies to select donated toys and clothing for their children using vouchers. Last year, the store served more than 2,000 individuals, mostly children.

Donations have been slow to come in and the needs are great, Eggert said.

Last week, the Road Home sheltered a record number of people on a single night: 1,406. That's in addition to families and individuals who are clients of YWCA Utah and Volunteers of America-Utah.

"(Tuesday) night at the shelter we had 1,343 people," Eggert said, "so we're staying around 1,300, which is very concerning."

Donations can be dropped off from noon to 7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. weekends at 340 W. 200 South, which is the former Utah PaperBox building. Free, off-street parking can be accessed from the northbound lane on 400 West.

Financial contributions can also be made online at Candy Cane Corner's website at candycanecornerslc.org.

For more information or to make donations, contact Eggert at 801-819-7291 or ceggert@theroadhome.org.
