SALT LAKE CITY — For the first five years of the Utes’ run in the Pac 12, they haven’t been able to get the one win that would get them over the hump and into the conference championship game.
Saturday’s 52-45 win at UCLA may have been just that.
And it happened because of a record-setting day for ex-retiree Joe Williams.
Williams ran for 332 yards and four touchdowns in Utah’s shootout victory over the Bruins, but he wasn’t the only one who had a good day.
The Utes’ firepower started on the first play of the game, when Corey Butler-Byrd took the opening kickoff to the house for a touchdown. Brian Allen helped the Utah secondary pluck four interceptions off UCLA quarterback Mike Fafaul, and Hunter Dimick and Cody Barton each had 2 1/2 sacks to pace the pass rushing.
College football experts Christian Cox and David Nixon joined the studio gang to break down a big win for the Utes that led to ESPN sending College GameDay back to Salt Lake City next week.
They also broke down BYU’s one-point loss at 14th-ranked Boise State, including Fred Warner’s dance-happy interception, a bizarre final sequence and the Cougar receivers’ penchant for dropping passes.
