SALT LAKE CITY — A 33-year-old man died Saturday from injuries sustained in a shooting during an altercation while at a local car wash Friday night, police said.

At about 10:15 p.m., police responded to a report of a man that collapsed into the street near 1100 S. Redwood Road with apparent gunshot wounds, according to Salt Lake police Lt. Robin Heiden.

Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy said the man, identified as Christian A. Guiterrez-Marquez, was washing his car — which he had recently purchased — when an individual approached him.

A struggle broke out and Guiterrez-Marquez was shot in the torso. The shooter then fled the scene in the victim's car, Lougy said.

Guiterrez-Marquez was transported to a local hospital in critical condition Friday night, but died from his injuries Saturday morning.

"This is a sad case," Lougy said. "He was simply washing his car when an unidentified suspect came up. Some type of altercation ensued and unfortunately Christian was shot and his vehicle was taken."

Lougy said the victim's vehicle, a dark-colored 2015 Toyota Avalon, was found on fire at around 3 a.m. Saturday near 1530 W. High Ave.

"It appears the suspect in this case lit the car on fire," he said.

Heiden said witnesses who saw Guiterrez-Marquez collapse in the street said they did not see any vehicles or anyone around him. However, police were able to recover security camera footage that recorded the altercation, Loughy said.

"That's proven to be a very valuable piece of evidence," he said.

Salt Lake police said they are looking for a male with average build that was wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

As for the victim, Salt Lake police said Guiterrez-Marquez was married and had a child.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the Guiterrez family as Christian leaves behind a wife and an (8-year-old) child," Salt Lake police tweeted Saturday afternoon.

Anyone who may have any information regarding the case is urged to call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
