With the fall season setting in and spooky Halloween decorations popping up, there’s one thing you don’t want to look scary — your lawn! The change of season brings a change in lawn care. For Utah and the surrounding region, this means it’s time for fall fertilizer.

Why fertilize in the fall?

Fall fertilizing is the most important lawn feeding of the year since it takes care of lawns through the winter and all the way until spring. Planning for a gorgeous lawn next spring begins now with a fall fertilizer application that is formulated for our local soils.

This time of year, many lawns have damaged and unsightly dry patches that the hot summer sun has caused. Since the Intermountain region is prone to having hot, desert-like conditions in the summer with temperatures occasionally exceeding 100 degrees, fall, with its cool temperature, is the ideal time for lawns to recover from summer heat stress and damage.

Fall fertilizer is the most important feeding of the year because, not only does it help repair damage from the summer heat, it also provides energy that will be stored in the roots and utilized early next spring for a quick green-up.

What does your lawn need?

Right now lawns need a specially formulated fall fertilizer that includes nitrogen and an elevated amount of potassium (the 3rd number on the bag). Both nutrients encourage a thick green lawn while preparing the lawn for the long cold of winter.

Using IFA’s Step 4 Fall & Winter Fertilizer with Omnicote iron to fertilize your lawn this fall will give you the results you desire. This specially formulated fertilizer has the extra boost of nitrogen and potassium your lawn needs this fall. Formulated with Omnicote iron on the fertilizer (an iron coating on every fertilizer particle) your lawn will have a darker green that will last until well into the winter months.

Bonus tip:

In addition to using IFA Step 4 Fall & Winter Fertilizer, an application of IFA Bountiful Earth Humate will yield significant benefits. The latter improves the availability of iron and other trace minerals already present in the soil, improves fertilizer efficiency and helps increase the soil’s water-holding capacity and fertility.

Both of these products are available at IFA County Stores. Just apply as directed and water thoroughly to ensure a healthier, happier lawn. To find a store near you, visit ifa-coop.com and start protecting your lawn.
