NORTH SALT LAKE — A 5-year-old boy was in critical condition after getting hit by a vehicle Monday afternoon, police said.

The vehicle hit the boy while he was walking across Highway 89 near 2800 South just before 5 p.m. The boy was not in a crosswalk at the time, police said. The boy was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital.

The South Davis Metro Fire Agency tweeted that Highway 89 northbound would be closed from 2600 South to 3100 South for several hours and encouraged drivers to avoid the area.

The driver is cooperating with investigators and they do not believe there was any impairment at this time. The speed limit on that section of the road is 45 mph.

More information will be added as it becomes available.

Editor's Note: Officials originally said the victim was 6 years old but later corrected their statement to say he is 5 years old.
