In as little as 15 minutes—about the time it takes you to wait for your morning latté—you could check your annual mammogram off your to-do list.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast to check for breast cancer. A screening mammogram is performed for women who have no symptoms, whereas a diagnostic mammogram is performed for those women who have found a lump or other signs of the disease.

According to the National Cancer Institute, signs of breast cancer can include “breast pain, thickening of the skin of the breast, nipple discharge, or a change in breast size or shape.” A diagnostic mammogram can also be used during special circumstances such as when breast implants or dense breasts make a screening mammogram difficult to obtain.

How is 3D mammography different?

Additionally, places like Tanner Clinic offer a newer type of mammography known as breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography. This is done in conjunction with a regular mammogram and eliminates the need for additional positioning. It takes a series of images and converts them into a three-dimensional image, which can increase cancer detection. It also improves visualization and detection in younger women and in dense breasts.

Dr. Camille Stevenson, an OB/GYN at Tanner Clinic recommends telling the mammography center if you have breast implants or are experiencing pain or symptoms such as a lump, which will automatically require a diagnostic screening. “Whenever you can be preventative in medicine, rather than trying to fix a problem later, you will minimize problems and invasive treatments down the road. That should always be your first course of action,” says Dr. Stevenson.

What are the current recommendations for screenings?

The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for all women over 40, regardless of family history. The Tanner Clinic’s Women’s Center strives to make the entire process—from setting the appointment, to getting you in and out—as quick and easy as possible. They are open at 8 a.m. for early morning appointments, so you can go before work, or take a friend and go during your lunch break.

A mammogram can detect cancer in women who have no symptoms. Early detection can mean early treatment, which could save your life or the life of someone you love.
