ARCHES NATIONAL PARK — A major road construction project in Arches National Park will close a popular campground for the summer of 2017.

The Devils Garden Campground will be closed March 1 to Oct. 31, according to Arches National Park officials. The construction project will include resurfacing, restoring and rehabilitating roughly 26 miles of roads and pullouts in Arches National Park.

Some of the construction will take place along the entrance road from U.S. Highway 191 to the visitor center, along the main park road, the campground road and other spur roads and loops throughout the park, park officials said. The bridge rail at the Courthouse Wash bridge will also be removed and replaced and drainage work will occur near the entrance station.

“While construction crews will make every effort to minimize disruption to visitor travel and activities during this project, visitors should expect delays and closures for much of the season,” park officials said in a statement. “In order to maximize staff and visitor safety, the park may close Devils Garden, Delicate Arch and Windows area trails during construction in those areas. The park will reopen trails once area construction work is completed.”

Specific areas may require full road and area closures, such as at Devils Garden Campground, Delicate Arch road and The Windows road, park officials said. Closures may be up to two weeks for each area, except for the Devils Garden Campground which will be closed for seven months.

Park officials said they anticipate that much of the construction will occur at night in order to minimize impacts to visitor daytime travel and access. Construction crews may use pilot cars and flaggers to control traffic during the day or night, and when partial daytime closures are in effect, the crews will limit traffic delays to 30 minutes or less per work zone.

More information about upcoming closures and the phases of construction can be found on the Arches National Park website.
