You’ve finally found your dream home, the papers are signed and the place is yours. What’s next? Oh, just the task of packing up your entire home and moving it in to a new place, preferably without breaking or losing anything. Oh, and can it be organized too? While we’re at it, let’s waste as little time as possible with all of this. If the thought of moving boxes, tape and sorting all of your belongings makes you feel as much anxiety as signing mortgage papers, here are a six tips to help make it easier.

1. Make sure you have the essentials

Can’t live without your hair dryer? Not sure what morning looks like without your favorite mug? Whatever those essential items are, make sure you place them in a box together and label it appropriately. Load this box in the truck last or keep it with you in your car.

2. Label, label, label!

Not only should you give detailed information about what is in the box, each box should also clearly say where it goes. Something like “Tommy’s Legos, Playroom, 1st door on right upstairs”. Then your helpful friends and neighbors (or professional movers) can transport your goods right from the truck to the appropriate rooms.

3. Enlist friends and neighbors to help with kids and pets

Your 4 year old may be convinced that “re-packing” boxes after you’ve so neatly packed them is helping, but we’re pretty sure you won’t agree. Avoid some frustration by asking friends or neighbors to help with kids or pets while you pack and move.

4. Pack fragile items with soft towels or t-shirts

Things can get a little hectic and even boxes marked fragile sometimes get squashed or thrown around. Take extra precautions by wrapping plates, cups, figurines and vases in towels, t-shirts or even clean socks. Not only does this save you a little bit of space, it also helps keep your things in good condition.

5. Deep clean your new home a few days in advance

No matter how clean your new home looks, you’ll find some things you’re not so sure about when you really get in and start looking around. We’re also pretty sure there’s nothing better to relieve moving anxiety than scrubbing walls and deep cleaning grout. If you can’t possibly add one more thing to your to-do list, enlist friends and family or call professional cleaners in your new city.

6. Know when to call the pros

Sure, it’s nice to save a few bucks and get help from friends and family for the price of pizza and soda, but can you really put a price on your sanity and peace of mind? Movers will come in, neatly pack your belongings, safely transport your furniture and have you in your new home before you know it. Find professional movers in your area!
