SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, won't attend the Republican National Convention despite being elected a delegate.

"She has said all along she would go if it helped Utah and the 4th District," Love's campaign manager, Dave Hansen, said. "Now, she has the opportunity to go on a congressional trip" to the Middle East "to learn more about terrorism."

Neither Hansen nor Love's congressional office could provide details about the trip.

Love has not said whether she will vote for the GOP's controversial presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Hansen said her decision "did not have anything to do with Trump."

Utah GOP Chairman James Evans said he was told several days ago Love would not be attending the July 18-22 convention in Cleveland where Trump is set to be formally nominated. Her delegate position will be filled by an alternate.

Evans said he understood that Love would be campaigning in Utah during the convention. She faces a rematch this November with Democrat Doug Owens in a race that's already being called a toss-up.

Love, the first black Republican woman elected to Congress, had a prime-time speaking spot at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, where Mitt Romney was nominated.

Hansen said he is not aware of her being asked to speak at this year's national convention.
